Peter NikolaidisPeter Nicolaides is a professional diver, biologist-oceanographer, hyperbaric physiologist-pharmacologist and offshore engineer. Following high school in Athens College he completed his first Honours Degree, B.Sc. in marine biology and hyperbaric physiology-pharmacology at Queen Elizabeth/King's College, University of London. After gaining experience in the Mediterranean, Red and North Seas, he continued into postgraduate studies in Offshore & Coastal Engineering M.Sc.(U/W Science and Technology, UMIST). Since 1977, he has been operating SST Maritime (Subsea Scientific & Technical) in Greece, a company involved in coastal and offshore engineering and scientific marine research. The Aegean Institute, SST and the Aegean Diving College based on Paros are involved in marine research projects with the University of Athens (Dept.of Marine Biology & Dept.of Post-Graduate Oceanography),the University of the Aegean (Dept.of Marine Sciences), the University of Patras (Rio-Antirrio Project), research institutes (Hellenic Centre for Marine Research), Government Agencies (Public Power Corporation-National Telecommunications Organization, Ministry of Public Works, Psyttaleia Project) on energy and communication cables, oil-platforms, flow lines, sewage treatment works as well as major marine construction projects. He has participated in many scientific expeditions in marine archaeology and marine ecology and has been the subject of several documentaries since 1976. In 1975 as Diving Officer for the National Geographic Foundation Expedition in Greece, he located the most ancient wreck known to date, of the Early Bronze Age, off Dhokos island, in the Argolis Bay. In 1976, he worked on the Calypso with Jacques-Yves Cousteau, excavated the wreck of Antikythira and dived the Britannic, sister-ship of the Titanic. In 1988 he discovered the treasure-laden wreck of the Turkish fleet Flagship, blown-up by Kanaris in 1822, off the island of Chios. Peter is currently running a marine environmental education center on Paros, is involved in marine research projects and in creating a network of marine protected areas in the Cyclades, working with Pierre-Yves Cousteau and Cousteau Divers. (He is a 3* CMAS Instructor and gained his first instructor's certificate in 1973.) |
